Introduction

When I was a high school student in the little city of Rajshahi of Bangladesh, I wanted to be a doctor so that I could help the poor people. My grades were not good enough to be a medical student. Then I wanted to be a teacher. I had also a dream to obtain a Ph.D. I obtained a Ph.D. and then I started my job as a Research Fellow for the Bangladesh Institute of Social Research (BISR). This position was equal to an Assistant Professor. In the meantime, I applied for a U.S. visa and planned to be admitted at UNR. It was my dream to be a UNR student. I got admitted at UNR with the help of Dr. Michael Robinson and Md. Moktar Hossain, a Ph.D. student at the department of CTL. Dr. Robinson helped me significantly. I will not forget his contributions. He helped me in academic and non-academic works.

I was totally new in the U.S. education system, especially at UNR. I was scared of English because it is my second language. Professors and instructors’ encouragements helped me to move forward in the Master’s in Secondary Education program. Their teaching and education sharpened my knowledge to be a prospective teacher and researcher. This portfolio reflects how their teaching through this program developed my knowledge, skills, and dispositions required of a professional educator in the following six domains of professional:

Domain 1: Foundations of Education

Domain 2: Human Diversity & Learning

Domain 3: Curriculum

Domain 4: Instruction

Domain 5: Research and Assessment

Domain 6: Professionalism

Through the Master’s in Secondary Education, I learned how the American education was reformed from the 19th century to 20th century. I also learned educational philosophy and the social foundation of education and their relevance to current education policy and practice. I understand constructivist modern educational and traditional philosophies. This program helped me to understand about the benefits of the modern education system and demerits of the traditional education system. Now I understand why students in Bangladesh are bored in the classroom. Teachers still use old traditional education systems in the classroom. In Bangladesh, education is teacher-centered. Whatever the teacher likes, he teaches to students. Students’ thoughts are not evaluated. The teacher has the rights to do anything. The American education is student-centered. In the U.S., the classroom is energetic and interesting to students and it is still trying to improve to be more interesting. Equal education is for all including male, female, and different racial, ethnic and cultural students. Education for all groups of students in the same classroom is better, effective and successful. In Bangladesh, achievement is declining because of separate classrooms for male and female students.

The modern educational system is interesting, active, coherent and effective to both teachers and students. It lasts long in the students’ mind and they will be speedy and active in the future. Based on the modern science curriculum, students can realize what they should do in the future. As an example, I learned how a teacher will teach preparing a lesson plan and curriculum from EDSC 663, CTL 746 and CTL 650. I learned the modern 5E model through EDSC 663 with Dr. Michael Robinson. Based on the modern 5E teaching model, the teacher will try students’ engagement in the lesson, then the teacher practices Explanation, Exploration, Extension and Evaluation.  In the old traditional systems, these issues are not followed. Students are not interested in the lesson and overall achievements are not satisfactory. That is why the modern scientifically proven curriculum should be prepared for teaching in the U.S. It will convey the image of socially constructed knowledge. Its student-oriented approach will emphasize the basic facts, skills, and concepts of science and technological contexts meaningful to students. One curriculum is for both male and female students, including the students with disabilities. Through this program, I learned how the special students will be taught and evaluated with other students.

Through the Master’s in Secondary Education program, I learned how to evaluate students and its process. Through CTL 746, I learned that when teachers measure students’ attainment of knowledge and skills to know about their teaching and learning strategy, they engage in formative evaluation. As an example, when I teach students according to my curriculum, I give them a quiz to decide about how I am teaching and how are they learning. If I see their score is good then I will carry on and if I see their average score of the test is not satisfactory then I will try to improve my teaching. On the other hand, when teachers measure students’ learning to determine grades at the end of the semester or year when students are ready to proceed to the next phase or year, they engage in summative evaluation. Schools’ administrators, principal, and superintendent can review students’ achievement in learning and their overall success through the result. For an example, I will provide such a quiz and exam for students at the end of the year. I will try to finish teaching before this time line.

Through this program, I learned how to conduct a survey and research. This portfolio shows how I learned the five domains through 36 credits. I mention them in a nut shell below:

The course CEP 705 Advanced Human Growth/Development helped me to understand the historical, philosophical, and social foundations of education and their relevance to current educational policy and practice.

This artifact helped me to understand the theory of human growth/development.  The theory of human development is based on human behavioral characteristics. The theory describes the different characteristics of human behaviors that include cognition, emotion, personality, work behaviors, and ego development.

The recent view of human development is known as the Interactionist model. The Interactionist model of development describes how development occurs and is a result of the interaction between external, environmental forces and the innate human characteristics. Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development is an Interactionist model, which assumes that development advances through a series of stages as schema interacting with the external influences of the environment.

The course CTL 702 Critical Issues in Secondary Education helped me to understand the critical issues in secondary education based on the historical, philosophical, and social foundations of education.

This artifact provided me understanding about the historical perspective of secondary education. It also helped me to understand the teaching methods and how students will be taught.

Through this artifact, I learned how educational expedition of the U.S. got a revolution since the eighteen century to the twenty first century.

The course CTL 702 Critical Issues in the Secondary Education helped me to understand the foundations of education in secondary education.

Since this artifact, I did not know about the High School Proficiency Examination (HSPE) and Nevada’s educational policies. Through this artifact, I learned about the standards of HSPE and where students have problems and where they have interests.

The test is necessary to measure reading strategies. If they do not have basic knowledge of reading then it will be difficult to understand anything.

This artifact helped me to understand the American education system and how it has developed especially the modern education system.  Through this artifact, I learned about Science, Technology and Society (STS) based education.

In Bangladesh, students are bored in the traditional educational system. In the traditional education system, exams are the final and only evaluation criteria. That is why in a traditional educational system, students try to learn only the things which are necessary for the exams. On the other hand in the U.S. education system, tests are not final and the only evaluation criteria. Students perform their demonstrations using modern tools and technologies. Students feel interested in the modern education system.

Therefore, the modern educational learning style is the best way to teach students which I learned for the first time here in UNR through the course EDSC 663.

I saw diverse cultural groups of students were in the same classroom including the students with disabilities. This artifact helped me to understand how multicultural, ethnic and racial students learn in the same classroom. I also understand the impacts of community upon the teaching and learning process.

This artifact helped me to understand more clearly the teaching and learning process. It also helped me to understand the categorizing of different ability groups.

Naturally all students’ intelligence, working capability, and performance ability are not same. That is why students should be categorized depending on their abilities and performances. Equal opportunity must be provided among all students both male and female including different races, ethnicities, religions, and students with disabilities. Students should not be assessed based on genders, races, ethnicity, and religions. This artifact also helped to understand the student evaluation process.

In the U.S., the people with different races, ethnicities, religions live in peace and happiness. To hold this peace and happiness, every citizen has to be educated. In this circumstance, education has to be for all. Every citizen has to respect others. As a teacher, I will keep all these issues in my mind while teaching. This artifact helped me to realize these issues.

Through this artifact, I understood that currently the minority groups of students are doing well then past however they are in teaching profession as much as white people. That is why they have to be educated to be in teaching professions.

The course CTL 746 Secondary Curriculum covered the entire domain 3 Curriculum. Through this artifact, I understood how to prepare a curriculum and what to remember when preparing curriculum for high school students.

The text books of this course, Curriculum Leadership and Pearson, describe different issues of curriculum such as chapter 7 describes about the evaluation criteria of curriculum. To measure the attainment of teaching and learning strategies based on the curriculum, teachers use two types of evaluation criteria such as formative and summative.

Through this artifact, I understood that the formative evaluation’s result is used to determine teaching strategies. Based on the test scores, teachers will decide whether their curriculum is working well or not. On the other hand summative evaluation is used to determine entire semesters of teaching strategies and student achievement. It is taken at the end of the year or semester.

The course CTL 746 Secondary Curriculum covered the entire domain 3. Through this artifact, I learned what to keep in mind when building a curriculum for high school students.

Teachers should use multiple resources in teaching such as videos, computers, internet, e-books, etc. Students are interested in the latest technologies such as ipod, iphone, and e-books. Students like to use the internet, and it is very easy to access the latest data and information. So the latest technologies used in teaching could make them interested in learning.

The teacher has to be as an expert in the philosophy of curriculum. The teacher should develop a new and exciting exploratory curriculum.

The curriculum has to be current and enriched with up to date data and information. Students’ engagement and their interests have to be in curriculum.

Setting a unique questionnaire, climate change issues awareness were surveyed in 27 students, teachers and general people in Reno and Sparks area. Collected data and information were be analyzed to find strengths, weakness and opportunities in curriculum. Collected data and information were presented with different graphs, diagrams, tables, pie graphs. The curriculum and teaching strategies among the students and general people were studied through this research. This research helped to go in to the topic. So it helped to understand in details of curriculum.

Through this artifact, I obtained knowledge and experience about Nevada’s local and national high school science curriculum.

Through this artifact, I learned how to prepare instructional plans to make appropriate decisions in education management. When I was used to teach in Bangladesh, I did not follow such appropriate instructional plans. Now I will be able to integrate this knowledge in student teaching. I will be able to build a complete instructional plan which will include a detail objectives, rationales, aims, activities, and evaluations. If I see any lack in teaching, then I can improve it changing my teaching style.

Through this artifact, I learned that school profile and students information are important to prepare an instructional plan. National, state and local standards of curriculum should be known in this regard. Present and past High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) test’s results also would be known to prepare an instructional plan.

Through this artifact, I learned how to prepare a lesson plan. Seeing the instructional plan, any one will understand what will be taught. An instructional plan includes aims, objectives, rationales, activities and evaluations. When I was teaching in Bangladesh, I would make lesson plan. However, it did not has aims, objectives, and rationales. It was just an outline. Now I learned how to prepare modern and effective lesson plan.

Through this artifact, I learned the modern 5E model. Since this course, I did not have any idea about the 5E model. It is really interesting and effective in student teaching. I will follow this modern teaching style when I will be in teaching profession.

When I was in Bangladesh, I did not use internet at high school. Still now at high school, a few schools provide computers with internet. They think that internet is not helpful for students. Colleges also do not provide computers with internet. School administrators and teachers request parents not to provide internet to their high school students at home. The reason for this is pornography. It is definitely harmful for them. However, internet can open a broader window of knowledge. It is easy to access to the latest information and data. It is also important that all information and data are not true and right. This artifact helped me to understand which websites are true and useful. This artifact helped me how to identify these issues.

This artifact was one of the examples of searching information. Through this artifact, I learned how to find the correct data and information through internet.           Publishers’ information, dates, their addresses, and qualifications help to make sure about the data and information.

Through this artifact, I learned the teachers’ evaluation process. Teachers’ evaluation system started in the United States in the 1960’s by enterprising college students (Cahn, 1986).

This artifact covered the domain 5 Research and Assessment. This artifact helped me to understand how to evaluate teaching strategies. Teacher evaluation process has some merits and demerits. It helps teachers to realize and improve the teaching styles and gaps.

Teaching evaluation process helps a teacher or faculty to be the best teacher. To evaluate a teacher, supervision committee is formed by the educational institutions. All these process are done to improve teacher’s accountability, knowledge of growth, and teaching skills. However, it is always not effective and successful because sometimes it is influenced by teacher.

Although I conducted several researches including PhD, I learn more interesting and important issues through this artifact which helped me to be a better educator including a researcher.

In Bangladesh, teachers only teach, they do not research. They do not responsible for students’ failure or success. To achieve students’ success, it is important to know about the students. That is why teacher should have to be a researcher.

This artifact covered the domain 5 which helped to understand the research and assessment. This artifact helped me to understand how to evaluate professional practice in order to improve positively.

The artifact “Term Paper” was an active practice to develop a variety of well-designed teacher. It helped me how to practice and write a good article and paper. It helped me to improve my present skills of writing a paper.

The EDRS 700 course was completely a research based course which was designed to cover the domain 5 Research and Assessment. Through this artifact, I learned what qualitative and quantitative researches are. I learned from this artifact how to write a qualitative and quantitative research.

Through this artifact, I learned that the historical, social, geographical research papers are written based on qualitative research method. On the other hand, scientific, statistical and lab based researches are written according to quantitative research method. All these issues were reflected through this artifact.

The artifact “The Final Paper” was written based on qualitative research method. However, this artifact helped to practice both qualitative and quantitative research methods. I presented collected data and information with different methods such as graphs, diagrams, tables, pie graphs.

This artifact broadened my professional background. This artifact covered the domain 6 Professionalism. Before the Master’s in Secondary Education program, I did not know about the American education system such as how the science or arts classroom is; how students learn; and how teachers teach. Through this artifact, I learned how teachers demonstrated scientific practical class.

In Bangladesh, where I was used to teach, the academic achievement was not satisfactory. In the U.S., this tendency surprised me. Student achievement is much higher than Bangladesh because of the modern education system.

Many national data and research evidence shows that students achieve school completion and attend college more than in Bangladesh.

When I started my MS program at UNR, I was interested to see the American high school setting. I thought that I would see only the environment of the classroom. However, it significantly helped me to gain knowledge and enhance my professional experience.

This artifact helped me to broaden my professional scope by participating in classroom observations and learning the different issues of classroom settings.

This artifact helped me to analyze classroom settings and management. This artifact helped me to categorize and group different students. This artifact helped me to make a classroom interesting and active.

When students felt bored, teachers gave them different activities such as games, jokes, and plays which made them active. They were engaged in the lesson.

To achieve, to obtain, and to reach the edge of success every citizen should be educated. That is why proper care should be provided to persons with disabilities. The persons with disabilities can be powerful citizens of the U.S. I learned all these issues through this artifact.
